Rainy days are no longer crazy days (English follows Japanese)

(https://thegreenhour.org)

When children don’t have a chance to use their energy, they fidget and lose their ability to pay attention.

Before Covid, we took the preschool children out once a day for 30 to 40 minutes if the weather was good. If it was very hot or cold, we might shorten the time. If it was rainy, we usually skipped outdoor time and played actively indoors.

It seemed like a reasonable approach, but we did notice a lot of wiggles and lapses of attention on rainy days.

As part of our Covid adjustments, we started having outdoor time twice a day from the spring of 2020. We spend 30 minutes or more each time, regardless of the weather.

Yes, we go out when it is rainy! Yes, we go out when it is hot or cold! (Thank you, preschool parents for dealing with raincoats and doing all the muddy laundry.)

What have we learned? When children spend more time outside, they are less wiggly in the classroom. Our children seem happier, more peaceful, and more able to focus. These are not just our observations. Research agrees.

"Studies show outdoor time helps children grow lean and strong, enhances imaginations and attention spans, decreases aggression, and boosts classroom performance.” (https://thegreenhour.org)

Even as the pandemic slows down and life returns to normal, we will continue to spend a lot of time outdoors with our preschool children, rain or shine.

Parents, how about doing the same? Try spending at least an hour a day with your kids outdoors on holidays. You might find that it benefits you as much as it does your child!
